Hey beauties, Maui here!
I have to admit, 2015 has been a fantastic year. Yes, there were some lows but there were a lot of highs too. This year proved to be one in which women soared above expectations and did all kinds of queen sh*t. One group of women that really enjoyed plenty of highs are my plus size beauties. Despite the lack of real trendy clothes to buy, these ladies with a little extra cushion definitely did it big (pun intended) in 2015 and dabbed on anyone who tried to stand in our way.
Unless you were under a rock or trapped in someone’s closet (literally), I know that you witnessed plus size beauties being bold and slaying the scene. Be it fashion, business, inspirational or any other area of life; this year proved to be one when women refused to be excluded because of their size. We were determined to do all and be all and that is exactly what we did.
Yeah, we know that many of you still look at us in a negative light, saying ignorant things like, “plus size women are promoting obesity and unhealthy living.” However, the truth is; plus size women are promoting something that is greater than anything else, LOVE. We are showing other women that there is nothing wrong with loving the woman in the mirror, flaws and all. We share our truth because it led us to greater places in life and we know that size doesn’t make the woman.
Yep, hate it or love it, the underdogs are on top and we rocked hard in 2015. If you don’t believe me, check out some of this year’s highlights made possible by my plus size beauties.
1. Danielle Brooks
From “Orange Is The New Black” all the way to “The Color Purple” on Broadway, Danielle Brooks is having a pretty awesome year. She appeared in Lane Bryant‘s #ImNoAngel campaign where she declared, “I break the mold” and that is exactly what she has been doing and we could not be prouder.
2. Ashley Nell Tipton
While people in the plus size community have been familiar with Ashley Nell Tipton for a several years, the world began to know Ashley as the emotional chubby designer on Project Runway. While her opponents doubted her, she earned the respect of the judges and made it to New York Fashion Week where she ultimately became the first plus size designer to have all plus size models on the runway and win. NOW TAKE THAT…HATERS!
3. Ashley Graham
Model turned designer, Ashley Graham had a pretty kick ass year! She premiered her line of lingerie as a collaborative effort with Addition Elle. Ashley was also a part of two of Lane Bryant‘s most successful campaigns, #ImNoAngel and #PlusIsEqual. This curvy beauty was everywhere, slaying the scene and proving that confidence is sexy in any size.
4. Shonda Rhimes
With credit for shows like “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Scandal” and “How To Get Away With Murder;” it is obvious that Shonda Rhimes has been having a good year for several years now. It’s no surprise that she was able to pull off a year of yes because this plus size beauty has truly been blessed (yeah, I rhymed right there).
5. Missy Elliot
Just because she slimmed doesn’t mean that we have relinquished our rights to Missy Elliot, she is still a plus size beauty and this year she returned with a bang. From her appearance at the 2015 Superbowl (where millennials thought she was a new artist, #TheNerve) to her recent performance on “The Voice” and her new single “WTF,” it’s clear that Missy still has the ish that we fell in love with back in the 90’s.
6. Gabourey Sidibe
Oh how I live for a bold, unapologetic fat girl, one that you better not come for because she is always ready to clap back; no one fits that description better than Gabourey Sidibe. Gabby came to us in the form of “Precious” in 2009 and has since scored many amazing roles including Becky, the blonde haired straight up assistant to Lucious Lyons on “Empire“. While we love and respect Gabby for her craft, we appreciate her using her celebrity voice to shut down fat-shamers and Internet trolls while spreading the message of self-love in spite of size.
7. Chante Burkett
Blogger Chante Burkett of Everything Curvy and Chic had a pretty AHMAZING year! She was selected to be a part of Target’s swimsuit campaign (the only Black woman and the only plus size woman) and she was featured in StyleWatch Magazine’s denim spread for different booty types. Chante was also one of this year’s host of Essence Street Style Block Party (hand picked by Chevy!) during New York Fashion Week. While this success came at a very trying time in her life Chante didn’t hide it, she shared her journey as she witnessed her mother fight and succumb to cancer. Just another factor that made us love, respect and celebrate Chante.
8. Tess Holliday
This year, Tess Holliday made history when she became the first plus size model her size (22) to secure a contract with a major modeling agency. This news of this landed Tess on the cover of People magazine, another major accomplishment for the “fat girl” from Mississippi. While, Tess has been slammed with a bit of controversy this year also, we have to acknowledge her major achievements that will pave the way for many other plus size beauties.
9. Essie Golden
For years, Essie Golden has been sprinkling her #GoldenConfidence everywhere she’s went and in 2015, it all paid off. While we respect her grind as a model and blogger; in 2015 Essie proved to be so much more as she successfully produced two amazing events that targeted a void in the curvy community.
10. Shaina Harrison
While it is no secret that Shaina Harrison of Out Of The Corner has a immaculate style that is unmatched, there is so much more to her and this year she shared her gifts with us. This teacher by day is an advocate for women and had begun using her education and experience to motivate change. Her #BraveSpace Periscope broadcasts and events have proved to be just what the doctor ordered for many women in need of direction and healing. More recently she rocked our world as a stylist while working with Pop Up Plus, proof that there is no limits to what Shaina can do.
11. Amber Riley
Still riding the wave of her role on “The Wiz Live!” as Addaperle, the Good Witch of the North, Amber Riley is having a her best year yet. Amber became a part of our homes as Mercedes on the hit show “Glee” and since then she’s been popping up everywhere. She was also a part of Lane Bryant’s #ImNoAngel campaign and she tried her hand at modeling for Kierra Sheard’s brand Eleven60. Rumor has it that we may soon get an album out of this plus size beauty also, with the year she had in 2015 I am so looking forward to her future.
These are just a few plus size beauties who did it big in 2015, there are so many more. Chime in beauties and share some of your favorites in the comment section below.
