So, you must have a flat stomach (and only a flat stomach) to wear a crop top huh? Yeah right, the devil is a liar (in my Nannie’s voice)!

I am a proud fat girl; I wear a size 24, I have a serious gut and I have rocked several crop tops. Any fashion forward person knows that it is not about what you wear but how you wear it and with that being said, fat girls (or whatever you want to call us) can rock the hell out of crop tops.

For those of you that are under a social media rock; allow me to pour a little tea about the shade that an editor from O Magazine (a magazine owned by Oprah Winfrey, a woman who has battled weight issues and is considered plus size) threw at one of its readers as well as many of us. The reader asked a question that many of us have looked in the mirror and asked, “Can I pull off a crop top?” Clearly, this was a chance to encourage, empower and enlighten readers but the editor dropped the ball and responded with:

“If (and only If) you have a flat stomach, feel free to try one. For more coverage, layer a top over a longer shirt as shown in look two”.

Although the editor from O Magazine missed the opportunity to shed light and empower, I want to take the time to do just that. Yes Virginia, there is a Santa Claus…LOL! Seriously, to the reader and all the women without flat stomachs; YES YOU CAN PULL OFF A CROP TOP. The key is to find one that accommodates you and your curves and wear a bottom that supports the look you want to achieve. In case you need some inspiration, check out the way me and some of my blogger boos rocked our crop tops below. You can also search the hashtag #RockTheCropTop for more looks.

Fantastic post! I’m not plus size, but when I read that, I was like “you’ve got to be kidding me”. Women can and should wear whatever they feel comfortable in and makes them feel good about themselves. We need to stop dressing for other people and dress in what makes us happy.

Great post. While I have not yet mustered up the courage to wear a crop top, this post was was both informational & encouraging, Thanks..

You are more than welcome. There is a crop top out there for you Tiffany, you just have to find it.

This is so encouraging. I saw an article in a magazine that said crop tops are only for people with flat stomachs. I wholeheartedly disagree.
I have yet to rock the crop top and have been nervous about showing even a smidgen of belly, but I will certainly take these tips into consideration.

    • July 10, 2015 / 4:31 pm

Adia, you are more than likely talking about the same article. You are right to disagree!! There is nothing wrong giving yourself a second or third glance or even deciding not to wear something for your own personal reasons. However, never let someone and their thoughts hold you back. Be as bold as you want to be and know that fashion is brought, style is birthed.

I love love love this post! I for one, have more crop tops that I can even count and I have no problem wearing them. It’s all about wearing what you feel comfortable in and I’m so disappointed that anyone would even let that ridiculous article go to print.

    • July 15, 2015 / 10:41 pm

Thank you! I honestly don’t see how they thought it would fly.

#Preach! Style for me is all about a good mix of comfort and confidence. If you can style your crop top to fit your body type, than go for it! Flat stomachs have never and will never be a requirement for being fab, crop top or not.

*HIGH FIVE* Yes, that is my thought too.

Thank you, thank you, thank you for this post. I used to suffer from severe anorexia and the recovery weight gain landed me solidly at 190 lbs (I’m only 5’7.) I’m just learning to love my body again, and you definitely empowered this awkward teen girl to wear the crop top she’s been hiding for a year.

Stumbled across your comment and I know it’s been a couple years, but I hope your recovery has continued and that you love your body how it is! <3

Thank you so much! I’ve always been afraid to wear crop tops or short shorts because I was ashamed of my body but you helped me so much!

This is a post which is needed to be read by all the fat women and get motivated to love their body. The dressing is all depended upon their own comfort and willingness to wear it.

This is sooo great for me because my fat ass can’t even fit in my new jeans ?? and you are so inspirational!

All of the ladies pictured are only showing a little bit. ._.
I want to show more tummy, and I don’t wear my pants to my belly button… It isn’t exactly encouraging when I can’t seem to find anyone wearing them that way….
