Everyone should know by now that I’ve had grey hair most of my life! Practically all of my life. I’ve written about it a few times (if you’re new to my blog welcome! Please catch up and read about my hair journey).

But I realized that I never really share how I specifically maintain my greys. I mean, grey hair care should be a main topic on my blog right, #KanyeShrugs! Anyone who has grey knows that them buggers are pesky, have loads of personality and often don’t listen to anything we tell them.

I get a lot of emails proclaiming that my hair is fabulous (thanks) and asking how I keep them shiny and silver.

reader question for gorgeous in grey

I’ve managed to create a routine that works for me and my greys. Take what you want out of this and make it your own. It’s not the grey hair bible so if your hair falls out because of something I recommended…don’t sue me, seek medical attention immediately!

Here’s a quick “get shiny greys” DIY solution that I use in my hair every two weeks:

  1. Mix equal parts of 3% hydrogen peroxide, water and your favorite conditioner in a spray bottle.
  2. Spray clean, damp, non-conditioned hair with the mixture.
  3. Comb through the hair with a wide-toothed comb or pick. Leave on for 15 to 20 minutes before rinsing.
  4. Repeat once a week to prevent buildup.

So my secret is out! That’s how I keep my hair shiny. Also, even though I get blow outs often, I avoid heat as much as possible. It will turn your hair a brassy brown gross eww kinda color. I’ll put that secret in a separate post!

Shop my favorite shampoos, conditioners and oils!

    Hi Ty,
Your grey is beautiful!! I am 52 years old,and don’t know what to with my hair. First of all I keep dying it,when I don’t want to,really! Then on top of that I have Lupus, and it’s not something I have come to grips with, but trying one step at a time. Then it’s falling out so badly until I only wear a ponytail! Any advice?

neetle tea on your hair they both work wonders on grey hair also.

I have very dark brown (almost black) and white silvery hair. It is cut in a long pixie. No matter how often I trim the ends, in no time the ends are yellow again. I use purple shampoo, low heat to dry…still yellow. It is so frustrating. I do live in area with very hard water. Could that be the problem?

    • February 19, 2016 / 11:33 am

The hard water is not helping. Try the recipe I included in this post. I’ve also heard Apple Cider Vinegar will strip it as well.

      • April 13, 2017 / 6:15 am

I never wash my hair with tap water. It turns my hair yellow if I do. I buy distilled water and use it to wash my hair. I’ve also used hydrogen peroxide mixed with baking soda to make a runny paste. Apply to clean damp hair, cover with a shower cap and leave on for 20 minutes. Rinse and wash hair with shampoo and distilled water.

Ginni – I have this problem when I visit my daughter. She has well water with a water softener. After shampooing a few times there, I see yellow in my hair. I make the peroxide/baking soda paste when I return home and it removes the yellow.

grey hair is very porous.. cigarette smoke will invade it….and to my surprise once had new spectacle frames, and hair sides by ears went greenish colour…problem was there was copper in the frames and when hooked over my ears this problem appeared. Took me a month or so to work this out.
Of course went back to the optometrist and after some debate had the frames replaced with non metallic surface. Strangely, the optometrists had never heard of this problem before.

Quick question? I just made a small amount of this and couldn’t use it today. Have you ever found that the Hydrogen peroxide is no longer potent if you make this and it sits around a day or 2?

    • August 16, 2016 / 10:19 am

I’ve never made this and saved for later. I can imagine once air gets involved it will lose some power.

    • January 21, 2018 / 1:08 pm

Hydrogen peroxide breaks down when exposed to sunlight. That is why you always see it sold in those brown bottles. So I don’t think the saved mixture would be as effective

      • January 22, 2018 / 4:49 pm

You might be right. I’ve only ever made enough for one wash.

I’ve been going grey since I was eighteen. I am forty six. Part Indian. So I am darker than most and I spend tons of time in the sun with my flowers and garden. My grandfather had beautiful white hair. My grandmother however had more of a wirey aphro texture. I think I may have gotten her genes. Is there something other than the cider to use for the frizz? I feel like I’ve tried most of products on the store shelves. Except for anything that may be in the section for aphros because I never knew what to look for.

Many thanks for your postings! My former natural hair color was jet black, so the grey is a fabulous contrast. The yellowing problem was getting frustrating and I didn’t want to turn into a purple girl. I was concerned about peroxide, but the recipe you provide looks promising–not so worried about hair breakage.
I am on my way to the pharmacy now!!!

If you use any lanolin based products on your hair, that will turn your greys a real ugly, dirty looking yellow.

Hi. Thank you for the much needed advice on how-to take the yellow brassy tones out. I wanted to ask: if you use( or not) a edge gel, what would you suggest? My edges are naturally white although I had me grayish black hair dyed two months ago to grey.

    I love your hair!
So I too, have had grey hair since early twenties , and it has gotten more dense and for lack of a better word, more resistant. I spent many years coloring it, but within the lastb2 years I have left it. I also decided to go natural (4C) so it’s been difficult because my hair (from the root to 1/2 way) is grey then a yellowish brown with black. It’s annoying and I’m so tempted to cut or color.

I’ve been looking for the right shampoo to brighten my greys so my natural hair doesn’t look and feel so rough.
    I’ve enjoyed following your page!

    Hi Ty
Great hair! I have salt and pepper hair like yourself.
I would like to use your technique of applying 3% hydrogen peroxide but what happens to my dark hair. Does that change colour too?? I have naturally black straight hair.

    • July 16, 2017 / 5:25 pm

Nothing happens to the dark color. The hydrogen peroxide is a cleansing agent it will not change the color. It will strip residue from your hair. Which could leave it really dry, this happens to mine. So I deep condition directly after the treatment for at least 30 minutes.

I did gray color recently I just washed that one time and with violet shampoo but after I just iron that , some part of my hair became yellowish , is hydrogen peroxide works for me too ?

That’s I’m unsure of. You might want to consult a colorist.

I have colored my hair since probably 13. Finally at 46 the silver lining was winning. I went cold turkey, the day after Thanksgiving and shaved my head!!! I knew that was the only way for me. I had already been dying it platinum, but the back of my hair still has a lot of dark hair…so I was still dying it a lot. So as I said I shaved it off and wore hats for a couple of months and I love it!!!!

I have light salt and pepper in the back and white that frames my face. Once a month I use 1/3 Cup conditioner & 1/3 Cup peroxide. Put it on my dry hair, leave on for 25-30 minutes then wash my hair. It really brightens my hair and gets any yellowing out.

Ty, how many treatments are needed to clear the yellow from my grey?

    September 21, 2018 / 10:15 am

    Hi ty,

I am 69 years old and have had the yellow tinge on my grey hair to occur from time to time after gray hair started coming in. I think my problem is, I don’t always use the same shampoo and conditioner each time I wash my hard, thus my problem of identifying which product causes the yellow tinge is a bit harder to recognize. About a month ago after washing, the tnge appeared again. This time I tried the vinegar rinse but all of it did not come out. I will try the peroxide and baking soda this weekend to hopefully remove the rest. I haven’t fully embraced the grey hair, can you provide any advise on a good coloring rinse to use to color my hair that works well with grey. Thanks, Carry

Hi, this is the most helpful thing I’ve come across, my hair looks pure white but probably has about 3% dark still which shows more when wet. I have learned the hard way not to use straighteners, curling iron or any other heat other than gentle hairdryer heat as all singe my hair brownish however lightly i use them. I have a yellowish tinge to some of my hair, almost in strands, and mainly on the topmost layer which makes me think its water deposits or sunlight… I use purple shampoo occasionally but I don’t like the steely mauve effect and it doesn’t touch the yellow strands. I have a shampoo with edta which I use occasionally. I will try the vinegar rinse first, then the hydrogen peroxide mixture.

just ran across this website and love the advice and comments! my grey hair is mainly around my hairline and smack dab in the middle of my forehead, the grey in my hairline has turned a goldish color!! i color all of my hair with john frieda and start with that “gold” part. i’m wondering if the color is sitting on it too long, making it brassy…
would the peroxide or apple cider vinegar get rid of it? or are those recipes just for hair that has naturally turned grey?

    appreciate the help!

I have pure silvery white hair. I don’t really like the purplish cast that shows up after using the purple shampoos. A hair stylist told me to use it only on the ends, which helps a little. I really think the peroxide/water/conditioner helps my hair look brighter and less yellow. Didn’t know about the suggestion to make only enough for one batch. Will try that. As you all know, heat really damages white hair ends. I always use a heat protectorant before I blow dry and never use a curling or flat iron. If possible I try to let my hair air dry instead of using the dryer. The sun will also yellow your hair so I have become an avid hat wearer.

Tinted my hair since I was 14. Now 68 and loving the gray buy hate the yellows. I use ION Lavender (no peroxide or developer) added to a Shimmer Lights soap cap for 20 minutes. Not all the time but special occasions when I want sparkle
