You guys know by now I totally love talking. As shy as I am, once I’m comfortable with you or the minute you laugh at my not-so-funny jokes, I yap your ears down under your blouse until you walk away or beg me to shut up. So naturally I love interviewing people. Especially folks in the industry that are making moves.
Back in 2010 I did a few posts under the title of A Blogversation with… In my quest to bring you more original content, the series introduces you to the many talented people I know in the business. Blogversations will highlight some of my friends in fashion, fab bloggers, newbies to modeling, and my favorite creative folks.
Please allow me to introduce you to fashion stylist Robin Fisher of Polished Image & Style. For this blogversation I sent Robin a series of fill in the blank statements for her to answer. ENJOY!
On a typical day with me you can find me sifting through magazines, looking for new trends and planning looks for my clients in my head. This is a habit that a formed when I was a department store buyer. I was taught early that fashion is a business that evolves daily, so to keep up you must study. Also I’m just one of those people that lives and breathes fashion. I’ve been this way since I was a little girl running the creative San Francisco Bay Area.
Starting Polished after being blessed with a set of twins in 2007 has been my greatest achievement. I always knew I would run my own business someday. All the corporate jobs I took in the fashion industry were strategic. So, I’m very happy that after years of hard work and planning, my vision became a reality. My greatest challenge has been juggling the roles of a dedicated wife and mother and independent business woman.
St. John, Alexander McQueen, and Rachel Roy are the designers that I am swooning over right now. I love pairing my classic basic items with sophisticated and edgy pieces. These designers definitely take classic silhouettes and turn them out!
Bright and muted color combinations, fuller skirts, and gold accessories and details will be trending next season. I believe you have to have a wardrobe filled with items that you love or it’s just not going to function. So when you’re shopping for Spring 2012 choose your items wisely.
All you need is a well tailored suit (skirt or pants), ornamented or colorful shirt (solid or printed), and darker shade of lipstick for a chic day to evening look. During the day rock the suit with the shirt underneath with a natural face of makeup. The jacket will tone down the shirt and give you and individual presence. Then, transition the look by simply removing the jacket freshening up your makeup and applying a darker lip.
The perfect pair of pumps is a pair of black leather Christian Louboutin Simple Pumps, one size larger than I normally wear in a 70 mm heel.
My hair is usually in an updated style, I like to play around with it. I grow it long, cut it off. You can say I reinvent myself with my hair often. My nails are always in a short natural manicure. As a stylist I work with my hands a lot.
I love to dress in sequins during big holidays, and I also like it in ready to wear minor details. The key to wearing sequins is making sure it does not look cheap. Take a close look before you purchase an item, be honest with yourself. Does it really look tacky or classy?
Style is personal expression and once you find what works for you it gives you personal confidence, but fashion is a business. The industry supplies consumers around the world with every item imaginable. That’s why it’s important to develop individual style and learn how to shop for you! You can spend a lot of money on clothes you never wear because they don’t fit your individual style. Companies make millions of dollars a month on consumers that are just buying to be buying…
Every fashion stylist should have a good understanding of the body types, and how to drape them in fabrics and silhouettes appropriately. Multiple styling kits for different types of assignments and services. A book shelf full of current style and fashion books and magazines (Stay on top of what’s hot!) and a comfortable, but stylish pair of shoes to work in.
I am super excited to say that Robin is one of my many tweethearts. We chat occassionally so I was delighted to read her answers as I learned so much about her too. Robin has worked in the fashion industry for over 15 years.
