To follow up with my post from last week (read it here –> The Short & Sweet Guide To Living Worry Free), this week I thought of tips on simplifying your life. Our lives can often be like a roller coaster ride on any given day, but who says you can’t decide when you’re getting on and off or even how fast the ride goes.
Here’s six easy tips to keep your life as simple as possible.
(1) Make lists and evaluate your time.
The key to list making is that you MUST set time aside to genuinely work on them. There’s absolutely no point in making lists if there’s no time to work them. So make them realistic. It’s better to have completed all 5 things on your list, then not to have completed any of the 20 on your list. In the end you will feel more accomplished and be ready to take on your next list for tomorrow. Take steps to your goals, rather than trying to attack them all at once.
(2) De-clutter your inbox(s).
Do yourself a huge favor and get your inbox in order — NOW. I have 5 email addresses that I have to check throughout the day. So I sort all my emails in different folders according to priority.
For example: Save = emails that I have responded to but may want to keep a record of the communication between the sender and myself. Follow Up = This one is obvious. Hold = Emails that you may need to get a little more information on before responding.
The disadvantage to having email folders is that you have to remember to check them at least once a day. Or as the saying goes, out of sight out of mind. Bonus Tip: Add Check Email or Check Follow Up Folder to your TO DO every day. This may seem a little redundant but trust … it’s a necessity.
(3) The Perfect Playlist.
Music is one of the best motivators out there. I have a playlist for everything. From Clean House, Operation 14, to Relax Relate Release. This way I don’t spend extra time flipping to hear a particular song. Playlists can put you in whatever mood necessary to get the job done. So turn it up and get to work!
Try going to the mall after 9pm. What happens? The doors are shut, locked, and everyone is gone. They. Are. Closed. Just like big companies you need to set your office hours. But remember to make them realistic to your lifestyle and your clients.
(5) Learn to SAY NO.
Ignore that urge to be great at EVERYTHING. You are only one person and only but so much of your TO DO list is going to get done (refer to tip #1). Ultimately you help others by saying no when it’s clear you can’t add another item to your list. You don’t ever want to offer help to someone and in the end you do a half a$$ job because you were way too busy.
(6) Do what you love.
Making money is ultimately everyone’s goal (or at least it should be). But don’t get burnt out by spinning your wheels in overdrive all the time. Take time out to do the things you love that will calm your soul and reset your brain. I love being social so Happy Hour every two weeks is a must for my well being.
